Lace Knitting

Just a reminder that Heike is teaching the Swallowtail Lace Shawl this Saturday. If you're intimidated by lace or just haven't gotten a chance to try it, this is the perfect first lace project, and it's a lovely shawl to wear or give as a gift! Heike will also be offering lace help on Saturday from 10-12, and the Swallowtail class starts at 1pm.

Hours Change

We've gone back to having two days off a week, so we will no longer be open on Mondays. We're still going to be open Tuesday through Saturday. Tuesdays we're still open late in the evening for Chicks with Sticks night, Thursdays will be our Continental Knit Day all day long, and Fridays is our Sit and Knit day.

New Yarn and On Sale

We continue to make room for new yarns and extended colors in our existing lines, so we've moved some more yarn to the sale cart in the back room of the store. Come and shop this wonderful sale!

Little Yellow House in the Snow

It doesn't happen often, and it's probably not near as much snow as there was, but by the time I got there Monday this is what our favorite little yarn shop looked like.

Tania (that's me!) has designed a scarf that uses just one skein of the luscious Malabrigo Worsted. You can find the pattern on Ravelry, and we'll have it in a printed copy asap.

I have to wonder if all of you are feeling the light of the "new" year. Lord knows we all needed a break from 2009! I started the new year by finally getting the baby room moved. We love the move and I have to say it has really brightened the store up. We are working on kites out of the fabrics below and samples to match. Jeanmarie knit a few little cami style baby dress tops and Katherine (our new fabulous magical seamstress) has added little fabric skirts with organza underlays.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Just a quick note to let you all know we’ll be open Tuesday and Wednesday, but we’re closing on Christmas Eve, and won’t reopen again until January 2nd.

Because of this time off, the Chicks with Sticks group won’t be meeting tomorrow evening or the following Tuesday evening. The group will resume meetings every Tuesday starting January 5th, 2010.

When we reopen in January we’ll be having a huge sale to make room for new spring yarns. Come into the store to see what we’ve got on sale!

This Week at Close Knit

It's cold! No, really, it's cold! When did it get so darn cold? Wasn't it just warm a month ago? My clematis at home was still trying to bloom until a week or so ago when I finally cut it back.

But cold weather gives a perfect excuse for knitting warm things, like hats and mittens and scarves, not to mention sweaters. There are so many yummy options for knitting warm things for ourselves, Malabrigo, Blue Sky, Berocco, Noro .. the list goes on and on!

Speaking of hats, I hadn't gotten around to posting the pictures of all the hats we sent to GMH last time. Look!

That's so many little tiny hats! And the basket is already overflowing. The folks at the hospital really appreciate all the hats for the little ones. I think they're also accepting afghans too, as long as they're not wool. Bring them into the shop and we'll get them distributed.

There are no more classes scheduled for the rest of the year, and due to inventory we won't have classes the first two weekends of the new year. Look for the newsletter to go out sometime in the next couple of weeks, just as soon as we figure out the classes being offered in January and maybe even February, to give you a good heads-up.

We at Close Knit hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Not to alarm you, but there’s now less than a month until Christmas .. hope your holiday knitting is well underway! I know mine is!

We’re making plans for the coming year here at the shop, but even so there’s still a lot going on. There are still classes to enjoy this month: Cindy’s Williamsburg Wreath, which is hanging up in the shop now and looks absolutely amazing, as well as knitted ornaments and gift bags, Catherine’s Blocking 101, and the very popular wet felting class.

December 8th the Chicks with Sticks knitting group is having their ornament exchange. Bring an ornament and your favorite holiday nibbles and prepare for some fun!

Something new at the shop: Bring in a donation of toiletries for our mission project and pick a discount card for a one-time discount of 10%, 15% or even 20% off your purchase that day.

The basket of hats for the Little Heads of Close Knit projects is full full full, but don’t let that stop you from knitting some more! We can always use more, because there are always new little heads needing hats to cover them up!

There’s still plenty of time to pick up holiday gifts at the shop for your favorite knitter. We have beautiful yarns here, and don’t forget the joy of a gift certificate!

This Week at Close Knit

Halfway through November already? There's just about 40 days left until Christmas .. eek! If you're still looking for some quick gifts, come on into the shop and take a loot at the One-Skein series of books we have, and looks for some new books showing up on the shelves soon.

We've got some replenishment of some of your favorite yarns, but don't expect it to last long. The Malabrigo is proving to be incredibly popular, and won't last long. It's so nice to knit with, after all. Even my husband says so!

There's still time to sign up for classes before the holidays. Upcoming ones include some quick-to-knit slippers, wet felting with Sheri, Cindy's wreath class, Jason's Tunisian Crochet class, and the ornaments and gift bags in December.

Another thing to think about: gift certificates are a wonderful gift for a fellow knitter, or for friends and family who don't knit to get for the knitters in their lives.

Cold weather has brought people inside, and a lot of you are coming into the shop to pick up new yarns for winter and gift knitting. SAFF was just this past weekend, and I was delighted to run into a few of you there, and hope that everyone who went had a wonderful time! I'd love to see pictures of things you found that I might have missed!

We still have Malabrigo in stock, though with the classes coming up that are perfect for using it - the beaded scarves and wristlets, the cabled bag, and even the curl-toe slippers would be great in this yummy yarn! - we don't expect to have it for long. We're still getting in new stock, so make sure to stop in to see what you might have missed!

Little Heads of Close Knit

Regulars at the shop probably know all about the charity project, but for those that don't, we've started donating newborn hats to Gaston Memorial Hospital. The first month we had 12 hats to donate, but last month we almost doubled that .. 23 hats!! Wow! That's such an amazing thing, and it was a joy to be able to donate so many!

Donations for this wonderful project can be left in the basket in the baby room, and we carry them to the hospital once a month. And don't forget, Perter Pan baby yarn is on sale this month, so pick up a ball .. or two! .. and make a few hats for a good cause!

With the weather getting cooler finally, it's time to start thinking about your fall knitting projects. We've still got several gorgeous colors of warm Malabrigo in the front room, great for a scarf, hat and mittens, or even a sweater or blanket. Of course there's always our beautiful Cascade in over 100 colors - I counted! - as well as fall hues of Noro, Berocco, and Lang among others.

Pick up a new technique at one of our classes, held every weekend - except for the weekend of SAFF of course. Tuesday nights our Chicks with Sticks meets at the shop in the evening, and Fridays there's always a group gathered to knit and chat.

Felted Hat Class!

Tania (that's me!) is going to be teaching a felted witch hat class on October 17th at 1:30pm. We will be using the Enchanting & Magical Witch Hat pattern by Anne Carol Gilmore .. you can see a decorated version of the hat in the shop - it's the one with the crows. This easy pattern lends itself to all sorts of decorating ideas - silk flowers, fabric, needle felting, and even beading - and can be knitted by anyone who can knit in the round.

This is not the greatest picture, but it's all I have until I can get one taken in the daylight. Sorry!

Class price is $40, and includes a copy of the pattern and the wire needed for the brim. I will have some tulle and some silk flowers, but feel free to bring your own ideas to help you choose yarn.

Little Heads of Close Knit

As some of you may know, we at Close Knit have taken on a new project, knitting baby hats for the Birthplace at Gaston Memorial Hospital. Our 1st official meeting will be held September 25th from 11:00 a.m. - 1 p.m. This is being led by our friend Sharon Huffstetler. We recently sent off twelve hats, for which the staff at GMH were very appreciative (see letter in the baby room), and we look forward to being able to continue sending these much needed hats every month.

Anyone who wants to knit hats for this project is welcome to bring them by and place them in the basket in the baby room. We will be sending the hats to GMH once a month.There will be a meeting on September 25th from 11am-1pm so come on by and knit a hat or two!

The Close Knit Circle

The Close Knit Circle is a program we have established here at Close Knit to provide an active buying incentive program for our best customers. The cost is $25.00 per year. With your $25.00 fee you will receive:

• Membership card.
• Frequent buyer card ($25.00 store credit when card is filled).
• One Close Knit Notepad
• Close Knit Stitch Marker
• 5% off all purchases, every day.
• 15% off one day during the week of your Birthday.
• Discount on class fees.
• Additional 5% off of class supplies (generally this is 10% off with classes), 15% total.

When using your frequent buyer card, the holder is solely responsible for the card. If card is lost or stolen, Close Knit will not give credit for lost or stolen amounts. A new card will have to be issued. With each purchase, for every ten dollars spent, one punch/initial will be given. If for instance the total purchase is $18.58, one punch will be given for that purchase. If your next purchase is $11.37, this too will receive one punch. We will not round up or run ongoing totals. Class Projects

This coming Saturday we have two classes, both being taught by Catherine. In the morning she'll be teaching the Noro Striped scarf, and in the afternoon she's teaching a Blocking 101 class - blocking mat and t-pins are included in this class.

On September 26th there are another two classes being offered. Sharon is teaching an intermediate-level crocheted sweater class, and Sheri is teaching the Fall Leaves Felted Pillow class based on a pillow in Nicky Epstein's Knitting in Tuscany.

The first weekend in October boasts another two classes. In the morning Roseanne will be teaching the Wisp scarf that everyone loves to touch, and in the afternoon Linda is teaching the Shelly crocheted scarf.

October 10th we have another two classes: Sharon is again teaching the Noro striped scarf, so if you missed out in September, get in on it this month, and Catherine is going to teach the Beginner Beaded Scarf.

New @ Close Knit!

Fall is coming, and along with it come new colors and yarns. Come on in and see the lovely fibers that have come in recently, and watch out for even more to follow in the coming weeks!

Berroco's new Sundae comes in some amazing colors, as you can see. This wool/acrylic blend must be seen to be believed.

Lang has also sent new stock of their Mille Colori Big, and Colora. Also wool/acrylic blends, these new colors are perfect for adding some punch to your fall wardrobe.

Then, of course, we have Malabrigo kettle dyed yarns. Those of you who know about Malabrigo know why we're so very happy to be providing this delicious fiber finally. If you haven't experienced Malabrigo yet, you should come and see .. and touch .. for yourself. We currently have the Worsted, Laceweight, and Gruesa - which is a thick-and-thin spun super bulky.

In addition to those, we're also now selling handspun yarns by Threeravens - our own Christiane's beautiful work for all of us to be inspired by - and slightly jealous of.

Here’s the news!!!

Better late than never, right? We’ve been having some technical difficulties, but we’re back!

We have lots going on the next two months. The following is a list of upcoming classes. They’re all pretty awesome! Please check the blog (http://closeknitknitterypress.blogspot.com/) for more information on our class schedule and descriptions of the classes and projects, and stay tuned for a post about our new rewards program called “The Close Knit Circle.”

We have some lovely sale yarns in the work room, and hope to be opening up a second work area in the next couple of weeks! Fall is coming soon, so look for your favorite yarns in warm and cozy fall palettes.

New Hours!

Beginning in September, Close Knit will be open on Mondays! Starting September 14^th, we will be open from 10am until 3pm.

Sunday: Closed
Monday: 10am-3pm
Tuesday: 10am-8pm
Wednesday-Saturday: 10am-5:30pm

We will be listing July classes hopefully by the end of the week. Lots of fun ones. Also our 1 year anniversary celebration will be in July. We will celebrate with a Tuesday night (our regular knit night) cookout on July 7th (5 until....). Also, we will be doing an anniversary sale on the 11th. For the remainder of June we are putting our Cascade Greenland (washable) and Cascade Lana D'Oro on sale 15% off.

I have started the paintings for the calendar and have been working to set up our Etsy site. Will let everyone know when it's up and running.

Our summer hours will begin next Saturday, we will be closing at 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Check out the new flowers and Catherine's stitch markers peeking out too. Her stitch markers will be shown in Vogue Knitting soon. Yeah Cat.

Info. for the upcoming week April 20-25: Friday and Saturday we will be hosting an OPEN HOUSE. Colleen Hewlett will have more of her beautiful jewelry!! You know I can't wait to get it in the door!! Also, Sue Dial has brought in some of her polymer clay shawl pins and other great jewelry. She has baskets of roving and yarn that will be available for sale. We have a few other vendors that will be coming in. Sharon will be selling her crocheted baby things. Please come by if you get a chance. Friday is Gastonia's 1st downtown gallery crawl and most every business downtown is participating. We will have the Paris Flea Market (fancy yard sale) on the green by the yellow house. Lots going on!!! See you there.

Saturday was our first Spinning Class. I didn't think I would love it, but I DID!!!! Chris did a great job! She gave us lots of information and instruction and has agreed to set another date soon. Becky said she would chop my head off if I posted her photo. Sometimes I do listen.

Oh, yeah, Colleen has agreed to teach wet felting on May 23rd and an advanced class in wet felting on May 30. It was the best class I ever took. I had a ball.
